Bernard Sanders was born in September 1941 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. He became involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He worked with union organizers and on the campaigns of many politicians. He returned to New York City, working at various jobs including Head Start teacher, psychiatric aide, and carpenter. He moved to Vermont and began his political career. Sanders served for eight years as the mayor of Burlington. He was elected as the representative-at-large for Vermont to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1991. He has served as a member of the U.S. Senate since 2007.

In the News…

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Congress should refrain from providing $10 billion in funding for Israel. “While we recognize that Hamas’ barbaric terrorist attack began this war, we must also recognize that Israel’s military response has been grossly disproportionate, immoral, and in violation of international law,” he said.

He also called for a “humanitarian ceasefire,” claiming that, since October 7, “over 22,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes, two-thirds of these victims have been women and children – and 57,000 have been wounded.”

He said, “Congress must reject that funding. The taxpayers of the United States must no longer be complicit in destroying the lives of innocent men, women, and children in Gaza.”

In December, Senator Sanders voted against the aid package that President Biden’s administration requested to provide funding for Israel and for Ukraine.
